PROVIDENCE – General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo announced last week the extension of her Smart Money Tour that aims to help provide financial security to Rhode Islanders.

As part of this tour, Raimondo’s department visits locales such as farmers markets and senior centers to help people find their unclaimed property and raise awareness about the importance of personal financial management.

Since announcing the Smart Money Tour, Treasury has received requests for additional programming and has expanded the tour to meet constituents’ needs, Raimondo’s office said in a news release.

During fiscal 2013, Raimondo’s office returned more than $8 million in unclaimed property to more than 8,000 Rhode Islanders, according to a news release. Since announcing the Smart Money Tour, the Unclaimed Property Division has processed 415 claims worth $295,259 with an average payout of $711 per claim. Currently, the office is holding more than 750,000 unclaimed properties worth more than $250 million. •
