PROVIDENCE – Gov. Gina M. Raimondo kicked off Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island’s Senior Hunger Awareness Campaign, “March for Meals” on Thursday.
Between March 3 and March 29, elected officials are delivering meals, speaking out for seniors and raising awareness of the community impact of Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island. Thursday’s event was held at the Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island offices at 70 Bath St.
“One of my top priorities is to provide opportunities to all Rhode Islanders,” said Raimondo. “That’s why my jobs plan continues to fund Meals on Wheels, so seniors and others in need can stay healthy and nourished in their homes.”
Immediately following the kick-off speaking program, the governor delivered a meal to a homebound senior, accompanied by Doug Scala, regional president of Webster Bank, the campaign’s presenting sponsor.
Each March, Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island spotlights the proven collaboration of local organizations, businesses, all levels of government and compassionate individuals to ensure that seniors are not forgotten.
“The services that we provide the seniors of Rhode Island are critical and the need is rapidly increasing,” said Heather Amaral, executive director of Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island. “Together, we can keep seniors living independently, healthier at home and feeling more connected to their community.”
