PROVIDENCE – Brown University ranks 15th in the nation for return on investment over the 20 years following graduation, according to the 2015 PayScale College ROI Report.

The rest of the region’s institutions of higher education fall somewhere between No. 179 (Bryant University in Smithfield) and No. 1130 (Wheaton College in Norton). The Community College of Rhode Island and the New England Institute of Technology are not ranked.

The ranking by PayScale, a compensation software company based in Seattle, used the difference between the 20-year median pay for a bachelor’s degree graduate of a school and the 24-year median pay for a high-school graduate minus the total four-year cost. The net for Brown over the 20 years was $723,900. Other data provided along with the ranking included the total four-year cost, graduation rate, typical years to graduate and average student loan amount.

“No matter how you look at it, college is an investment – both of time and money,” PayScale said in a prelude to its list. “Some schools are simply doing a better job of setting their alumni up for success in the job market.

“Whether you’re planning to study computer science or psychology, earning potential in your chosen field, along with the cost of attendance for the schools you’re considering, should be part of the equation when whittling down your list of best return on investment colleges,” the website states.

The top five schools listed are Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, Calif., net of $985,300; California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, Calif., $901,400; Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J., $841,000; Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colo., $831,000, and Babson College, Babson Park, Mass., $812,800.
