WASHINGTON – Rhode Island is slated to receive nearly $4.5 million from the U.S. Department of the Interior to help repair historic properties and clean up wildlife refuges damaged by Hurricane Sandy, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced Tuesday.

Nationwide, the department is releasing $475.25 million in emergency Superstorm Sandy disaster relief appropriations to 234 projects to help repair damaged parks, wildlife refuges and other federal assets.

Rhode Island is slated to receive roughly $4.49 million for restoration, repairs and preservation activities related to storm damage, including $3 million to the National Park Service and $1.49 million from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to repair roads and infrastructure to Rhode Island’s Wildlife Refuge Complex.

The $1.49 million from the Fish and Wildlife Service includes $723,000 to fund backup power and electrical improvements at the R.I. National Wildlife Refuge Complex in Charlestown, $475,000 to help fund road repairs for Sachuest Point Road and at the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Middletown and $190,000 for roof repairs and debris removal and $100,000 for road repair, both at the Charlestown facility.

“These funds will help Rhode Island repair and rebuild areas impacted by Sandy. Our wildlife refuges provide public access to the shore and free recreational opportunities for families. These funds will help ensure popular parks and destinations like Sachuest Point are recovered and ready for big crowds this spring and summer,” Reed, who led the effort to secure this funding as part of the Sandy relief appropriations bill, said in a statement.
