Regional consumer price index rises in November

PROVIDENCE – The New England consumer price index rose nearly 1 percent in November compared with a year ago on a nonseasonally adjusted basis, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The data includes other states in the Northeast – New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Nationally, the index for all items rose 1.3 percent year-over-year. The index includes everything from food and beverages and housing to medical care, apparel, transportation and energy.
A year ago, the regional index registered a 1 percent increase.
Regionally, the energy index dropped 4.9 percent in November, essentially matching national numbers, which showed a 4.8 percent drop.
Apparel prices were flat in the Northeast in November, and experienced a 0.3 percent decline nationwide. Food and beverage prices increased 2.7 percent, while nationally, they increased 3.1 percent.
Housing costs rose 1.8 percent, compared with 2.6 percent nationwide. Housing includes rent or the homeowner equivalent, fuels and utilities, shelter and household furnishings.
Medical care costs rose 2.3 percent in November, compared with a national increase of 2.5 percent in that category. Transportation costs dropped 2.9 percent in the Northeast; while nationally, transportation decreased 2.8 percent. Transportation includes private transportation, motor fuel and gasoline.
