Regional consumer prices rise 1.9% in October

CONSUMER COSTS in the Northeast rose 1.9 percent year-over-year in October, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index.

BOSTON - The Consumer Price Index in the Northeast rose 1.9 percent over the last 12 months to 246.13 in October, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday.

The Northeast region includes the six New England states as well as New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Nationally, from November 2011 through October, the index for all items, including the volatile food and energy prices, increased 2.2 percent to 227.97 before seasonal adjustment.

Regionally, the energy index rose 3.9 percent to 249.86 in October, after rising 1.5 percent in September. Comparatively, the national energy index rose 4.4 percent to 253.55.

The housing index in the Northeast posted a 1.3 percent increase in October and the index for transportation rose 3.8 percent.
