Repairs in store for Statehouse dome

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Statehouse dome is getting some much-needed attention this summer.
A four-month project to repair the interior of the dome and exterior windows of the Statehouse began in late July, according to a release from the Department of Administration.
Martone Painting Company Inc., of Narragansett, is the general contractor for the $256,000 project. Brewster Thornton Group Architects LLP is providing design services.
The repair will include plaster and paint restoration, as well as general cleaning. The dome’s mural depicts the “Four Freedoms” of Rhode Island, or the pillars of early life for settlers. They are: the land grant, religious tolerance, pioneering and the beginning of industry.
The mural was designed by James Allen King and completed by artists George DeFelice, Robert C. Haun and Victor Zucchi.
