CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A new report issued by the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies points to the increasingly aging American population, which will have ramifications on housing.
By 2035, more than one in five Americans will be 65 or older, and one in three households will be headed by someone in that age range.
The growth of the older population will impact demand for affordable, accessible housing that is well connected to services, and is beyond what the current supply can meet.
As the baby boomers age, the U.S. population aged 65 and older will grow from 48 million to 79 million. Housing units will require design elements including no-step entrances, single-floor living and wide hallways and doorways.
Only 3.5 percent of houses offer all those features, according to Harvard.
