Report: Atlanta out of running for GE HQ, R.I. not mentioned

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Business Chronicle is reporting that General Electric Co. will not move its corporate headquarters from Fairfield, Conn., to Georgia.
The article states that the company will “apparently stay in the Northeast, either in its current home … or two other Northeast contenders – the greater New York City area or Boston.”
The article does not mention Rhode Island as a potential location for GE. However, a Connecticut Republican state representative was quoted by the Hartford Courant in a recent story as saying Rhode Island is also strongly in the running.
The Courant story quoted State Rep. John Frey, R-Ridgefield, as saying that GE officials were impressed with Gov. Gina M. Raimondo’s handling of the pension issue, which began while she was still the state’s general treasurer.
Nearly a dozen states are trying to woo GE, one of America’s largest companies, with the most public being Georgia, Texas and New York.
The Atlanta Business Chronicle said Georgia had been trying to convince GE to move to Atlanta since this spring, after GE said it would consider moving its headquarters because of Connecticut’s moves to increase taxes for businesses.

Georgia was visited by a GE exploratory committee, set up to consider possible sites, early last month, but did not receive word as to whether there would be a follow-up visit, the newspaper said.
