PROVIDENCE – The Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area ranked 71st on a list of the 100 best and worst cities for STEM professionals.

Created by the financial services website WalletHub, the study looked at the 100 most populated areas in the country, comparing them across 18 metrics including per-capita job openings for STEM graduates, annual median wage growth for STEM jobs, projected demand for STEM workers by 2020 and housing affordability.

The best metro for STEM jobs? Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, Wash., followed by San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif.; San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, Calif.; Boston-Cambridge-Newton, Mass.-N.H.; and Springfield, Mass.

The Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford, Conn., metro ranked 20th, while the New Haven-Milford, Conn., metro ranked 54th. The Worcester, Mass., metro ranked 55th.
The only New England metro to rank lower than the Providence metro was Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Conn., at 93rd.

Jackson, Miss., was last on the list, ranking the worst for STEM jobs.

STEM occupations are expected to expand 1.7 times faster than non-STEM jobs between 2010 and 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Given their growing demand, STEM careers today comprise some of the most lucrative employment, paying higher salaries and boasting far fewer threats of unemployment compared with non-STEM jobs. In fact, the annual average wage for all STEM positions collectively was $85,570 – 81 percent more than the national average of $47,230 for all jobs,” WalletHub reported, citing BLS data.
