Report: East Greenwich safest community in R.I.

East Greenwich is the safest community in Rhode Island, according to BackgroundChecks.org, which released its list of the 20 safest communities in the state on Tuesday.
East Greenwich, with 13,100 residents, has a violent crime rate of 7.6 percent and the chance of being involved in a property crime there is 1.6 percent.
BackgroundChecks.org, a public safety-focused website, said it based its data on on FBI violent crime statistics and proprietary BackgroundChecks.org research data. It said rates are normalized per 100,000 residents with the state average being 219 for violent crime and 2,174 for property crime – rates were calculated by taking the number of crimes divided by population and multiplying by 100,000.
