PROVIDENCE – For the second year in a row, the rural town of Glocester is considered the safest city in the Ocean State.
Glocester, with a population just under 10,000, topped SafeWise.com’s 2016 safest cities list, with 0.4 violent crimes per 1,000 residents and 4.44 property crimes per 1,000 residents.
Violent crimes are aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery, and property crimes are burglary, arson, larceny and motor vehicle theft.
SafeWise, a home security and safety website, said it culled FBI crime data from 2014 to come up with the rankings. Communities with a population greater than 5,000 were considered. The website said it eliminated all cities with populations less than 5,000, as well as cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.
The rest of the top 10, in order?
Scituate, Jamestown, Burrillville, South Kingstown, Smithfield, Richmond, Bristol, Portsmouth and Charlestown.
“Whether it’s protecting their love of coffee milk or preserving civic liberties for generations to come, these 10 cities leave no doubt that Rhode Islanders take freedom and personal safety seriously,” SafeWise stated on its website.
It said that among the top 10, there were zero counts of murder and only three robberies reported in the FBI’s most recent crime statistics.
The most unsafe city in the Ocean State? Newport.
