ROCHESTER, N.Y. – New England Institute of Technology and Rhode Island School of Design each were included on a list of the top 30 small colleges nationwide for Introversion, Sensing, Thinking, Perception personality types by Degree Match, a website that helps individuals choose the right degree program.

More than 200 schools were reviewed, and only those with undergraduate enrollment of less than 10,000 were considered. Attendance cost, student-to-faculty ratio, U.S. News & World Report rankings, and ISTP areas of study were used to come up with the list.
Degree Match said the ISTP Myers Briggs personality type is referred to as “the virtuoso” and considered an “explorer.”
“These are people who love to explore the world with their hands. They are ‘makers’ who love to move between projects and take things apart to see how they work. Some of their best attributes include their optimism, energy, creativity, practicality and knowing how to prioritize tasks,” Degree Match said.
Some of the best ISTP job categories, according to Degree Match, include mechanics, engineering, graphic design, forensic science, construction, farming, emergency medicine and landscape architecture.
“ISTPs who choose to major in one of these ideal areas will have the highest levels of academic and job success, and satisfaction. They need the flexibility to be able to learn in more experiential ways. A smaller learning environment is key so they have many opportunities to work hands-on,” Degree Match said.

New England Tech, in East Greenwich, which ranked 15th on the list, said it offers the types of programs and learning environment best suited for ISTP individuals, noting programs in mechanical and software engineering, automotive service and construction management, and video game design, among others. Providence’s RISD, one of the oldest and most well-known colleges of art and design, ranked ninth. RISD supports two degree programs that cater to the ISTP Myers Briggs personality type: graphic design and landscape architecture, the website stated.
First on the list was Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.

Degree Match also listed the top colleges for other personality types, including the ESFJ – extraverted, sensing, feeling, judging. Bryant University in Smithfield was 30th on the list of the top 30 small colleges for ESFJs, who are considered “kind, warm, popular and supportive” and who do well in nursing, accounting, dental hygienist, teaching and occupational therapy careers. Bryant’s accounting program was noted as a good one for these personality types.
“They were likely to be a cheerleader or quarterback in high school. … Some of their best attributes include charisma, strong sense [of] morals, desire to help others, strong practical skills, sense of duty and loyalty. They can sometimes be seen as inflexible, needy or vulnerable to criticism. An ESFJ loves organizing their environment and working in a highly structured environment. Some of the careers for ESFJ learners are personal accountant,” the website stated.

Brown University was third on the list of the top 30 schools for INFJ personality types, described as “warm, sensitive, soft-spoken, creative, opinionated and imaginative.” INFJ stands for introvert, intuitive, feeling and judging, Brown’s screenwriting program is considered a good match for these individuals, according to Degree Match.
“Having an outlet for self-expression and a way to help others is the best fit for the INFJ personality type. Additionally, the INFJ career is typically that of a leader, and not a subordinate,” the website stated.

For ESFP personality types, extrovert, sensing, feeling, perception, two local colleges made the top 30 list: Johnson & Wales University at No. 29 and RISD at No. 6. JWU was noted for its hospitality programs, and RISD for its fine arts and fashion.

“Do you love the spotlight? Are you a born entertainer?” the website stated.
Some of their best attributes include character traits such as being bold, practical, observant, having excellent people skills and an innate ability to mirror a situation with appropriate emotion and behavior, the website stated about ESFPs.

INTJ personality types – representing introversion, intuition, thinking and judgment – people often known as a “book worm,” according to Degree Match, would find schools in the region to their liking as well.

Brown came in at No. 12 on the list, in that its offerings, including engineering, sciences and medicine match up well with the INTJ personality. According to Degree Match, people with these personality traits “are very commonly found working in the STEM fields.”
