PROVIDENCE – Paypal Holdings Inc., one of the world’s largest online payment companies, is considering to move its operations center to Rhode Island, according to a report today by WPRI-TV CBS 12.
A spokesperson from Gov. Gina M. Raimondo’s office declined to comment on the report. However, Michael Raia, her communications director, said the governor’s conversations with the company are ongoing.
“The governor and PayPal continue to have productive conversations, and we remain focused on bringing as many businesses and jobs to Rhode Island as possible,” Raia said.
Raimondo told Providence Business News recently she’s been in conversations with the online financial institution since making contact with the company earlier this year. She jumped on the opportunity after PayPal, based in San Jose, Calif., publicly canceled plans to expand operations in North Carolina after its state legislature passed a law that, among other things, requires transgender people to use the bathroom for the gender on their birth certificates.
A PayPal media representative could not be immediately reached for comment.
WPRI-TV reported PayPal is also eyeing the Industrial Trust Co. building, known as the “Superman building,” in downtown Providence as a possible place to locate its operations. The building is iconic to the Providence skyline and has sat empty since its last tenant, Bank of America, moved out in 2013.
Bill Fischer, a spokesman for the owner of the building, declined comment.
