PROVIDENCE – Providence is the 12th most charming small city in the country, boosted by the Downcity area’s overall charm factor.

That’s according to the Charm Index created by RentLingo, an apartment search site.
The index uses “big data,” to show how charming areas are, looking at such things as local businesses, crime, bicycle trails and gyms. It singled out cities with populations between 75,000 and 200,000, identifying their most charming areas.
This is what it said about Providence, and Downcity in particular:
“While many of the surrounding neighborhoods such as College Hill and Fox Point received high charm scores, Downcity’s high concentration of well-rated local businesses, pedestrian plazas and cafes earned it the highest Charm Rating in the area with a 95,” the website states.
Cities were rated on a 100-point scale, 100 being the highest.
The most charming small city? Alameda, Calif.
In fact, California cities dominated the Charm Index, holding nine of the 20 spots.
Closer to home, Harvard Square in Cambridge, Mass., placed third, due to its high safety ratings and active populace.
