Report: Providence among top 20 cities for small-business concentration

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s capital city ranks 20th in the nation for its overall concentration of small businesses at 2,466, according to a study released this week by American City Business Journals.

Boston was 14th for its concentration of small businesses per 100,000 residents at 2,573, and Portland, Maine, led the list with 3,252 small businesses. Small businesses are defined as having between 1 and 99 employees.

The American City Business Journals, in its Small Business Vitality report, said it looked at 106 cities nationwide and ranked them based on their ability to create and develop small businesses.

Providence also is one of the nation’s top 20 cities where small businesses fill the highest percentage of private-sector jobs. Providence ranked 11th in this category at 37.9 percent. Santa Rosa, Calif., led the list with 48.7 percent of local private-sector jobs generated by small businesses.

Providence failed to make an appearance on the list of the top 20 cities with the most small businesses. The top spot went to New York City with 557,293 small businesses, followed by Los Angeles with 342,154 and Chicago, 234,740. Boston ranked 10th with 121,957.
Data was used from 2014, the most recent year available, according to American City Business Journals.
