PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island ranked 35th in a listing of all 50 states based on overall economic performance released Monday.
Massachusetts led the nation in economic performance, according to Governing, a Washington, D.C.-based media platform covering politics, policy and management for state and local government leaders.
This is the first time since 2013 that Governing said it has ranked the states. It said it looked at six variables from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis to determine which states were faring the best, and which states were faring the worst: the current state unemployment rate; the improvement in the state unemployment rate over the past year; the per capita state gross domestic product in 2015; the percent change in real state GDP between 2014 and 2015; the percent change in state personal income per capita, from the third quarter of 2015 to the first quarter of 2016; and the percentage growth in year-to-date increases in jobs for 2016.
The only other New England state in the top 10 was seventh-place New Hampshire. Vermont ranked 25th, while Maine was 28th. The only New England state to perform worse than Rhode Island was Connecticut at 42nd.
Alaska and West Virginia tied for last place.
