PROVIDENCE – Another day, another list that shows the Ocean State at the wrong end.
Chief Executive magazine, in its 12th annual study of the best and worst states for business, placed Rhode Island 41st, or 10th worst on the list. That’s a drop from last year’s ranking, when the Ocean State placed 37th.
To come up with the rankings, Chief Executive earlier this year polled 513 CEOs, asking them to rank states they are familiar with on the friendliness of their tax and regulatory regime, workforce quality and living environment, including cost of living, education system, and state and local attitudes toward business.
Texas topped the list, followed by Florida. The two states have held the top slots since the study began, the magazine said. Texas was lauded for favorable economic reforms, while Florida was noted for adding 1 million private-sector jobs over the past five years.

Last on the list was California, preceded by New York, Illinois and New Jersey. Those four states all held the same spots last year. Connecticut was 46th and Massachusetts, 45th. Last year, Connecticut was 45th and Massachusetts, 46th.
