PROVIDENCE – A website dedicated to health care careers and education has named Women & Infants Hospital one of the 30 most environmentally friendly hospitals in the world, based on environmental certifications, recycling efforts, green construction standards and energy-saving programs.

According to Healthcare-Administration-Degree.net, the South Pavilion building of Women & Infants Hospital has been LEED Gold-certified since February 2010, and the building includes eco-friendly features such as low-flow plumbing to help conserve water, a subterranean filtration system to disperse drainage efficiently, and a reflective roof to cut down on energy costs.

“Power-guzzling hospitals around the world are increasingly going green in an attempt to minimize their carbon footprints,” said Tom Stevens, who authored the report. “We created this list for budding health care administrators to showcase 30 forward-thinking hospitals that are doing their bit to help save the planet.”

Women & Infants, which ranked at No. 26, was the only Rhode Island hospital to make the Healthcare-Administration-Degree.net list, and one of only three hospitals in New England named. The other two were the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (No. 17) in Boston and Martha’s Vineyard Hospital (No. 13) in Oak Bluffs, Mass.

Overall, 30 hospitals and medical centers in the U.S., the United Kingdom, Canada and Singapore were identified as the top environmentally friendly hospitals worldwide.
