Rhode Island 30th in hospital safety rankings

PROVIDENCE – According to the latest updated data for the Hospital Safety Score, which gives A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals, Rhode Island facilities rank the 30th best for patient safety in the country.

The twice-annual report is compiled by The Leapfrog Group and reflects hospitals’ ability to prevent mistakes, injuries, accidents and infections.

Rhode Island’s rank of 30th is based on the percentage of “A” hospitals compared to the total number of hospitals in the state.

“Leapfrog is one of numerous organizations that provide reports and rankings of hospital performance,” said Michael Souza, president, Hospital Association of Rhode Island.

“These organizations use different quality measures, and as a result, a hospital may perform well on one report card and poorly on another,” said Michael Souza, president, Hospital Association of Rhode Island. “When making health care decisions, patients should use all available tools at their disposal such as talking with friends and family and consulting with doctors, nurses and other health care providers.”

The only two hospitals in the state to receive the “A” designation were South County Hospital in South Kingstown and The Miriam Hospital in Providence.

The Hospital Safety Score uses national performance measures from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey and Health Information Technology Supplement.

An earlier PBN story reported the grades for all eight Rhode Island hospitals on the list.
