PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island College announced the opening of a cross-disciplinary Institute for Education in Healthcare to focus on workforce development opportunities for Rhode Island health care workers Monday afternoon.

RIC President Nancy Carriuolo welcomed the opportunity to help advance the state’s health care workforce.

“Rhode Island College, with its 30 health-related undergraduate and graduate-level programs and its paraprofessional certificate programs, is ideally positioned to assist with workforce development and economic development in our state’s No. 1 industry sector: health care and social services,” she said.

Leading the program is RIC School of Management Assistant Professor Marianne Raimondo.

Raimondo explained classes taught at the institute will include input from industry-leading health care organizations in order for students to better meet employer requirements.

“As we develop new programs for our external partners, the industry insight we gain will be integrated into our academic offerings at the college. Not only will students be learning the most current thinking in health care delivery, but they will have opportunities to gain hands-on research experience through special projects and internships that may ultimately lead to jobs,” she said.

The catalyst for the institute, said Raimondo, was the changing nature of the health care industry in Rhode Island and throughout the United States.

The institute is already engaged in multiple projects, including a Real Jobs Rhode Island grant to design specialized training in behavioral health, mental health and substance-use disorders. The institute is additionally involved with the R.I. Department of Health’s community health workers training program as well as North Providence Schools’ Health Equity Zone grant.

The RIC Schools of Nursing and Social Work, offices of Professional Studies and Continuing Education, Research and Grant Administration, the Center for Addiction and Behavioral Health Studies, the Health Care Administration Program and the Community Health and Wellness Program are also affiliated with the new Institute for Healthcare in Education.
