Rhode Island Community Food Bank kicks off summer food drive

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Community Food Bank hosted a breakfast prepared by the organization’s culinary job training program on June 21 to kick off its summer food drive.

First Gentleman and Summer Food Bank Chair Andy Moffit attended the launch breakfast. He said, “Ensuring that everyone has enough to eat during the summer months, especially children, our most vulnerable population, is a responsibility we share as a community. We need to come together and make access to food a priority.”

According to the organization the need for donations remains high in the summer, especially for at-risk children who during these months do not receive the free and reduced-price meals provided by schools during the academic year.

Andrew Schiff, the food bank’s CEO, called the need for donations during the summer months “critical.”

“We ask people across Rhode Island – businesses, individuals and organizations – to donate food and funds to help their neighbors in need. Please do your part to ensure that no one goes hungry this summer,” he added.

Donations were made by the Children’s Workshop, Dave’s Market and the Corvette Club of Rhode Island. Sponsors for this summer’s food drive are PGE Credit Union and Twin River.

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank distributes food to 60,000 struggling Rhode Islanders each month through a statewide network of 167 member agencies including food pantries, meal sites, shelters, youth programs and senior centers.
