PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island Hospital announced Tuesday that it was named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, a well-regarded nonprofit organization that annually surveys hospitals and collects and openly reports on several key performance measures of surveyed hospitals. These awards – Top Teaching Hospitals, Top Children’s Hospitals, Top General Hospitals and Top Rural Hospitals – are widely recognized as among the most prestigious awards hospitals in the United States can receive. The Top Teaching Hospital category is new this year, according to The Leapfrog Group.

This recognition showcases the commitment of Rhode Island, a Lifespan Corp. entity, to patient safety and quality, the hospital announced in a statement.

“This important distinction from Leapfrog is a tribute to the thousands of Rhode Island Hospital health care providers and support staff who ensure every day that our patients receive state-of-the-art care in an environment that is at once efficient, safe and welcoming,” Rhode Island Hospital President Margaret M. Van Bree said in a statement. “We thank Leapfrog for recognizing this commitment.”

Rhode Island Hospital, a teaching hospital for The Warren Alpert School of Medicine of Brown University, reported that The Leapfrog Group recognized 115 hospitals in total this year; 29, including Rhode Island Hospital, are Top Teaching Hospitals; nine are Top Children’s Hospitals; 56 are Top General Hospitals; and 21 are Top Rural Hospitals. Other than Rhode Island Hospital as a Top Teaching Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth, Mass., and Holyoke Medical Center in Holyoke, Mass., as a Top General Hospital, no other hospitals in Rhode Island or nearby Massachusetts were recognized this year.

Top Hospitals are selected based on the results of the 2016 Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which includes 23 separate measures. Several areas of hospital care are evaluated in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, maternity care and the prevention of medication errors.

“Being acknowledged as a Top Hospital is an incredible feat achieved by less than 3 percent of hospitals nationwide,” The Leapfrog Group President and CEO Leah Binder said in the statement. “With this honor, Rhode Island Hospital has established its commitment to safer and higher quality care. Providing this level of care to patients … requires motivation and drive from every team member. I congratulate the board, staff and clinicians, whose efforts made this honor possible.”

The Leapfrog Group named Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island a Top Hospital in 2014.
