WARWICK – Demolition of the original interior space at the Rhode Island Mall has begun, a process that is expected to take at least three to four months.
The work will be conducted by New England Construction, based in East Providence. The contractor has erected security fencing around an area of the parking lot.
Demolition will include both the upper and lower levels of the mall’s interior space, according to David Frederick, managing partner of MCB Real Estate LLC in Baltimore, which purchased the Rhode Island Mall in June. Construction will not affect the three remaining retailers, Wal-Mart, Kohl’s and Sears, which operate independently of the mall.
The redevelopment that immediately follows demolition will convert the mall interior to spaces for “junior box” retailers, those with footprints ranging from 20,000- to 50,000-square feet.
A Burlington Coat Factory store will be constructed to occupy a lower-level space in the mall, the first tenant publicly announced by MCB Real Estate.
