WASHINGTON – Rhode Island ranks among the top 25 state exporters in several industries, including 10th in scrap and recycled materials, according to the Business Roundtable.

International trade supports an estimated 130,000 jobs in the state and generated $2.4 billion in goods exports in 2012, according to a state-by-state analysis of trade data released Tuesday by the Washington, D.C.-based association of CEOs. The Business Roundtable is among the groups urging the Obama administration to pursue a trade agreement with the European Union.

Rhode Island ranked 48th in goods exports in 2012 and 41st in services exports, the latter with an estimated value of $1.7 billion in 2011.

In Rhode Island, scrap and recycled materials accounted for $641 million in exports in 2012. The state ranked 12th in fibers, yarns and threads, $3.7 million; 13th in fish and other marine products, $26 million; 19th in nonferrous (excluding aluminum) metals, $230 million; and 21st in ships and boats, $23.9 million.

One of Rhode Island’s fastest-growing exports is general-purpose machinery. These exports have increased by 14 percent per year since 2002. In 2012, exports of these products reached $152 million, according to the association.

The state in 2011 ranked among the top five exporters of film and television distribution services, worth $205 million.
