Rhode Island third highest for alcohol poisoning fatalities

PROVIDENCE – According to a Centers for Disease Control report, Rhode Island had the third-highest rate of alcohol-poisoning fatalities in the United States in 2010-2012, the most recent period sampled.
At the top of the list for alcohol poisoning deaths was Alaska with 46.5 deaths per million people ages 15 and older, with New Mexico in second place with a rate of 32.7 and Rhode Island with a rate of 22.8.
The report found that more than 2,200 people die from alcohol poisoning annually in the United States. It also found that binge drinking was to blame for the bulk of the deaths, which were especially prevalent in men between the ages of 35-64.
According to the CDC, three out of four individuals who died from alcohol poisoning in the U.S. were adults, mostly men, between the ages of 35-64.
The report authors found that the bulk of binge drinkers, including those dying from alcohol poisoning, were not alcohol dependent. •
