PROVIDENCE – Rhode Islanders who plan on seeking state-federal disaster recovery assistance for losses from Hurricane Sandy have until Monday, Jan. 14 to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

FEMA assistance may include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, uninsured vehicle damage and lost or damaged personal property, along with other costs incurred because of the storm.

“Don’t assume you wouldn’t qualify for assistance,” James N. Russo, FEMA’s federal coordinating officer, said in prepared remarks. “Let us figure that out.”

“We want to ensure that everyone who is eligible receives help,” said Russo. “If Sandy caused you any kind of losses – regardless of whether you are a property owner, renter, have already cleaned up or made repairs or have insurance - call or go online and register now.”

Federal and state officials are reminding Rhode Islanders that anyone who has insurance, including flood insurance, should still register with FEMA. Once registered, citizens can go back to FEMA for help if insurance shortfalls result in uncompensated losses. Those who do not register before the deadline will not qualify for FEMA help.

Qualified parties should register online at, via smartphone at or by calling (800) 621-3362 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.
