Rhode Islanders invited to share experiences with health care

Community members are invited by Gov. Gina M. Raimondo’s Working Group for Healthcare Innovation to share their experiences with health care in upcoming “listening sessions” in Warwick and Providence.

Officials say the input gathered from the sessions will inform statewide efforts to improve patient care and health outcomes, as well as lower health care costs for all Rhode Islanders.
State Health and Human Services Secretary Elizabeth Roberts and Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian will host the first listening session on Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. at Buttonwoods Community Center, West Shore Road, in Warwick.

“It’s so important that we hear from Rhode Islanders as we work to strengthen our healthcare system and build healthier communities,” Roberts said in a statement. “We are focused on building a better, more affordable, more predictable healthcare system for all Rhode Islanders. Share your stories with us. Let us know where our healthcare system is working, and where it’s not. What kinds of changes would you make to help the system work better for you, your family, or your business?”
In July, Raimondo signed an executive order that created the Working Group for Health Care Innovation, naming Roberts as chair. Avedisian also is a member of the Working Group.
The group is focused on four specific goals, which it will present to the governor in December.
They are:

  • Develop benchmarks and a plan to establish a global health spending cap for Rhode Island;
  • Identify an implementation plan to achieve the “80 by ’18” goals which tie 80 percent of healthcare payments to quality by 2018;
  • Develop a plan for next-generation health information technology systems for all payers to improve care and reduce waste in the system; and
  • Establish performance management frameworks to meet population health and wellness goals.

A second listening session will be hosted by Roberts and Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, the state health director, on Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex in Providence.
