Rhode Islanders rank 39th for beer consumption in U.S.

BOSTON – Rhode Island citizens are more moderate beer drinkers per capita than most other states, according to the Beer Institute’s annual beer consumption report.
Rhode Island came in at No. 39 for 2012 consumption per capita.

With 26.3 gallons per year for of age citizens, Rhode Islanders drink a little less than the national average of 28.2 gallons a year.

Topping the list was North Dakota with 45.8 gallons per capita, impressive considering the state came in 44th for shipments of beer into the state.

As the smallest state in the union, Rhode Island ranked in the bottom five for shipments of beer into the state, importing 661,213 barrels in 2012. It only beat out Vermont, Alaska, Washington, D.C., and Wyoming.

In 2012 the national consumption of beer increased by 1.5 percent since the previous year. According to the press release, Americans spent $1.7 billion on beer in the two weeks before the Fourth of July.
