Providence Public Library welcomes Rhode Island’s Historian Laureate and author Dr. Patrick Conley for a book talk and signing of his latest works The Makers of Rhode Island and People, Places, Laws, and Lore of the Ocean State on Sunday, March 24 from 2:00 – 3:30 pm in the Library’s Meeting Room (3rd Floor), 150 Empire Street, Providence.

The Makers of Rhode Island -- A look at Rhode Island’s history from 1790 to 1860, featuring prominent Rhode Islanders, such as Samuel Slater; Elizabeth Buffum Chace; Governor Thomas Wilson Dorr, leader of the Dorr Rebellion in 1841 - 1842. This volume includes colorful biographical sketches of 56 influential Rhode Islanders who helped shape the state’s urban and industrial development into the modern Rhode Island of today.

People, Places, Laws, and Lore of the Ocean State -- Forty-six essays on the People of Rhode Island, individuals as well as profiles of Rhode Island’s major immigrant groups. Places offers vignettes of neighborhoods, institutions, and historic homes and sites, particularly in Providence and Bristol. Laws looks at controversial or acclaimed statutes in Rhode Island’s Constitution. Lore is a potpourri of short essays on such topics as the relationship of George Washington, John F. Kennedy with Rhode Island, and slavery in the Ocean State.
