Robot Block Party planned for April

PROVIDENCE – A robot block party will be held April 11 at the Pizzitola Center, 235 Hope St., and more than 2,500 spectators and 50 exhibitors are expected at the event, which is being held in celebration of National Robotics Week.
The event, which is a partnership between the nonprofit Rhode Island Students of the Future and the Humanity Centered Robotics Initiative at Brown University, will be held from noon to 4 p.m.
Companies, schools and community organizations will show off their robots, or related technology.
Participants include Hasbro’s Animatronics Lab, igus inc., 3D Printing Providence, Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, University of Rhode Island, Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University, Providence Children’s Museum, Rhode Island Computer Museum and numerous K-12 schools, including Providence Career and Technical School, and Lincoln School, Mt. Pleasant High School and Nathan Bishop Middle School, all in Providence.

The Humanity Centered Robotics Initiative, comprised of Brown University faculty, students, and affiliates, looks at robotics as a means to tackle the problems the world faces today.
“Our research ultimately aims to help create and understand robots that coexist harmoniously with humans,” information about the initiative states.
Sponsors of the Robot Block Party include National Grid, Virginia-based Science Applications International Corp., igus Inc. in East Providence, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Brown University-Massachusetts Institute for Technology SSERVI Evolution and Environment of Exploration Destinations (SEEED) team.
