ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Aquidneck Island 4-H Team 78, AIR Strike, placed fifth out of 400 teams at the FIRST Robotics Competition’s world championship competition in St. Louis, according to EastBayRI.com.
The three-day FIRST – For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology – competition featured teams of high school students that were given six weeks to build a robot to compete in a game.
The game varies from year. This year, the students played ‘Rebound Rumble,’ where teams of robots tried to score as many basketballs into hoops as possible during a 2 minute, 15 second match.
Thirty-five high school students from 12 high schools across Rhode Island make up the AIR Strike team, according to the news source.
The team is sponsored by the naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport, the National Defense Education Program, Raytheon, BAE Systems, KVH and JC Penney.
