SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The dean of the University of Rhode Island College of Arts and Sciences has appointed Adam David Roth as interim director of the Harrington School of Communication and Media as the school prepares to embark on a national search for a permanent director.
Dean Winnie Brownell introduced Roth on the school’s website after making the appointment June 30. Roth, who is an associate professor of communication studies at URI, officially begins in his new post on Aug. 4.
Renee Hobbs, founding director in 2012 of the Harrington School which Brownell conceived and created in 2008, decided to step down as director on June 30, but will remain on the faculty as a tenured professor, according to the school’s website and URI spokeswoman Linda A. Acciardo.
A national search for a permanent director is expected to begin in 2015, Acciardo said via email.
“Searches for positions of this importance are considered strategic investments, and it is not uncommon when someone leaves a position to make an interim appointment,” Acciardo said.
The dean was not immediately available for comment, Acciardo said.
The Harrington School offers programs in journalism, film/media, rhetoric, communications and related areas of study.
According to Roth’s online profile, he became an associate professor at the Harrington School in 2013 after serving as assistant professor at the school and in URI’s Department of Communication Studies since 2007.
Roth earned a bachelor’s dual degree from the University of Pittsburgh’s business program in communication and rhetoric and business administration. At the University of Iowa, he earned both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in communication studies and rhetoric, as well as a post-graduate certificate for interdisciplinary inquiry.
