SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Kristen Stringfellow, superintendent of the South Kingstown Public Schools, is the 2017 Rhode Island Superintendent of the Year, the Rhode Island School Superintendents’ Association announced at its general membership meeting on Aug. 17.

The award, presented by Georgia Fortunato, superintendent of the Lincoln Public Schools and winner of the 2016 award, recognizes outstanding achievement in school district leadership, dedication to the education of all children, service to RISSA and commitment to the community.

During her tenure as superintendent, Stringfellow successfully lobbied for the school district to implement a one-to-one laptop program in South Kingstown High School, create a dual language Spanish immersion program in kindergarten and first grade and also brought Columbia University’s reading and writing project to the district.

She presented at the 2015 National School Board Convention, along with her school committee, on the subject of school finance. She is currently the vice president of RISSA.
