PROVIDENCE – Safer Institute Inc., a Providence-based nonprofit, has sent a team of health and technology to Les Palmes, Haiti.
The team of doctors, nurses, information technology professionals and medical and public health students will be in Haiti from July 14 to July 22.
The goal of the trip is to provide training on the use of ultrasound technology, visit shut-in resident who cannot visit the health center and pilot the use of the Institute’s technologies in an international response setting,
According to a release, Team members will also collaborate with local community health workers to identify strategies that address public health concerns ranging from cholera to hypertension.
“We look forward to working side by side with the staff of the Les Palmes Health Center inHaiti,” Peter Fucci, president of the Safer Institute said in prepared remarks. “This is a great opportunity for clinicians from both countries to work together while learning from each other.”
“In addition, we hope that the skills, equipment, and technologies being brought down by our team will expand the capabilities of the health center as well and the health care information technology infrastructure,” added Fucci.
The trip was planned in partnership with members of the R.I. Disaster Medical Assistance Team.
In addition to conducting medical outreach, Safer will be piloting the use of its Personal Identity Verification – Interoperable technology in an international response capacity.
The PIV-I technology is used to facilitate the identification and tracking of deployed personnel, and controlling access to facilities or information regardless of organizational affiliation. PIV-I is interoperable with the federal PIV system.
