NEWPORT – Salve Regina earned a mention on a list of the 100 most beautiful colleges in America, ranking No. 55 on a list from Best College Reviews.

The description of Salve Regina on the list includes a quote from former National Trust for Historic Preservation President Richard Moe, who had this to say about the university: “A small stroll through the campus of Salve Regina University is a tour of the great architectural works of the Golden Age.”

Moe also praised the waterfront university for preserving the historic buildings on its 80-acre grounds.

Ochre Court, a Neo-Gothic French chateau-like mansion dating back to 1892, is one of the most beautiful buildings on campus, according to the report. The hall was acquired by Salve Regina in 1947, 13 years after the school was founded. Other notable buildings include the red sandstone Romanesque Revival McAuley Hall and the “geometrically intricate mock-Elizabethan” manor house Wakehurst, the description states.

The top five most beautiful colleges in order were the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.; Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pa.; University of Chicago, Chicago; Princeton University, Princeton, N.J.; and University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.

Best College Reviews put together the list by reviewing “most beautiful college campus” list articles and informally surveying friends and colleagues both in and out of academia. Picturesque natural features, such as green spaces, bodies of water and arboretums were key criteria, along with elegant architecture. Specific buildings were then cited for their outstanding architecture.
“The ordering was selected simply on the basis of which, as a whole, seemed to be the most beautiful,” the press release from Best College Reviews stated.
