PROVIDENCE – The Samuels Sinclair Dental Center at Rhode Island Hospital celebrated the 11th annual Give Kids a Smile Day during which underserved and underinsured children throughout Rhode Island received dental care in clinics and private dental offices nationwide.
Samuels Sinclair Dental was able to see more than 30 children during the day, despite the event being held during the recent winter storm.
Shirley Spater Freedman, director of the center, said in a statement that tooth decay affects more than 25 percent of children between ages 2 and 5 and 50 percent of children between ages 12 and 15.
“Yet, in Rhode Island, only 1 percent of the Medicaid budget is allocated for dental services,” Freedman said in a statement. “For many children at our annual event, this will be their first visit to the dentist.”
Children received dental screenings, oral examinations, radiographs, cleanings, fillings, and educational materials including books donated by the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Family Resource Center. Members of Team Hasbro, Hasbro Inc’s employee volunteer program, brought toys and game for children to place with as well as toy for each child to take home.
