Frank Sargent was recently appointed to vice president of education and chief academic officer at the IYRS School of Technology & Trades. He joins IYRS after holding a handful of leadership roles at Johnson & Wales University, such as the special liaison to the president, interim provost and dean of the Feinstein Graduate School. Prior to his career in education, Sargent was a military pilot for 18 years before becoming a practicing attorney. He holds a B.S. from Salem State College, a J.D. from Suffolk University School of Law and an Ed.D. in educational leadership from Johnson & Wales University.

PBN: What do you feel are some of the current challenges that face higher education (as a whole)?
SARGENT: While there are many challenges facing higher education, one major challenge facing many schools and colleges across the country is developing and implementing a “comprehensive outcomes assessment model.” Today, more so than ever, the government, as well as both regional and specialized accrediting bodies, are demanding to know how effective higher education is and whether it is owning up to its promises, especially in light of the billions being spent on education. Accreditors assess institutional effectiveness not only on a student learning outcome assessment, but an assessment of the institution as a whole.

PBN: What are some of your plans for IYRS as you move into your new role as chief academic officer?
SARGENT: I will be providing leadership, ongoing support, and enhancements to existing programs, as well as creating a new program development model. A flexible program-delivery model will enhance the student-learning experience, so incorporating technology into the curriculum will be an important initiative for IYRS to explore, as well. Developing a greater online presence will also help expand IYRS’ footprint both regionally and nationally. Equally important is supporting the faculty. As such, I will be focusing on developing a professional development program to support further enhancing faculty teaching and the student learning experience.

PBN: Could you describe your role in developing a ‘Faculty Center for Academic Excellence and Innovation’ at Johnson & Wales University?
SARGENT: Institutions of higher education are always looking for ways to improve the overall student experience. One of the key areas that calls for continuous improvement is supporting faculty. While serving as interim provost, I oversaw the development of the Faculty Center for Academic Excellence. The purpose of the center was to create a universitywide program focused on teaching and learning excellence and innovation. •
