Save The Bay adds virtual swim option

PROVIDENCE – In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Save the Bay has made it possible for those who previously could not participate in The Swim, the annual trek from Newport to Jamestown, to take part virtually.

Save The Bay Special Events Manager Leanne Danielsen is happy the organization can now accommodate those who wish to “swim in spirit.”

She added: “Virtual swimmers have the same fundraising responsibilities as actual swimmers, and they receive the same rewards – the medal, the towel, the T-shirt, a 40th swim cap and the satisfaction of knowing they’ve made a difference to Narragansett Bay.”

Two examples of virtual swimming come from Charlestown’s Dr. Rick Fleeter, who will swim the 1.7 nautical mile journey in the Bracciano Lake outside Rome and Providence’s Ruth Mullen, who will swim in spirit while volunteering on the finish line.

The Swim 2016 will take place on Saturday, Aug. 13, and Save The Bay estimates more than 500 swimmers and 200 kayakers will take part in the 1.7-nautical-mile journey from Naval Station Newport on Coaster’s Harbor Island across the East Passage to Jamestown’s Potter Cove.
