NEWPORT – Longtime Aquidneck Island banker and lawyer William R. Harvey died on Jan. 5.

Harvey was a member of the board of directors of SI Financial Group, based in Willimantic, Conn., and its subsidiary, Savings Institute Bank & Trust with $1.5 billion in assets.

A Middletown resident, Harvey practiced law in Newport for more than four decades, first with his father, W. Ward Harvey, at Sheffield & Harvey, and then with his son, William W. Harvey II, at Harvey, Carr & Hadfield. He served as chairman of the board of directors of the former Newport Bancorp, which was the holding company of NewportFed before it was acquired by SI Financial Group in 2013.

“Savings Institute Bank & Trust is deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of director Bill Harvey. Bill brought a strong sense of community and served with a high degree of integrity,” said Rheo A. Brouillard, president and CEO of the bank. “His contributions to the success and growth of both banks in which he was an active director will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of getting to know him.”

Harvey served as a Middletown Town Council member for eight years, president of the Potter League for Animals and was on the board of Newport Hospital, The Newport County YMCA, The Preservation Society of Newport County and the Rhode Island Foundation.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Bill’s wife, Betty Lou, and his entire family,” Brouillard added.
