Second edition of R.I. Mini Maker Faire set for Newport

NEWPORT – The East Bay Edition of the R.I. Mini Maker Faire will be held Oct. 17 as a way to bring together established and beginning “makers” to celebrate do-it-yourself creativity and tinkering.
The free event is being held two months after the seventh annual R.I. Mini Maker Faire in Providence.
Organizers say the second mini maker faire also will become an annual event, and describe it as a free, family-friendly celebration.
Makers, manufacturers, performers, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics)-centered organizations, vendors and crafters are welcome to register for the noon to 7 p.m. event at the Florence Gray Center, 1 York St., through Oct. 2 by visiting makerfaireri.com. Call Todd at 413-441-7608 with questions.
“Our goal is to showcase the incredible STEAM-related things happening on Aquidneck Island and the entire East Bay – things that often people do not realize. This is also a great way for businesses to recruit and to just let people know the cool things going on undercover here on our island and surrounding communities,” according to information from the organizers.

The organizers say the event will feature rockets, robots, do-it-yourself science and technology, urban farming and sustainability, advanced manufacturing companies, alternative energy, bicycles, hand-made crafts, music and local food, and educational workshops and installations.

FabNewport and Tinker|Bristol, two local nonprofit organizations dedicated to furthering STEAM advocacy and programs, as well as advanced manufacturing skills and techniques, are hosting the event, along with support from AS220.

The Providence event attracted more than 3,000 attendees, and Todd Thomas, president of Tinker|Bristol, and Steve Heath, executive director FabNewport, say they are expecting between 2,000 and 2,500 attendees in Newport.
