PROVIDENCE – A section of Atwells Avenue in Providence will be closed for the next year, beginning Monday, for rehabilitation of the Atwells Avenue Bridge where it crosses the Woonasquatucket River.
The R.I. Department of Transportation has established westbound and eastbound detours. Drivers heading west will use Eagle and Valley streets to bypass the construction area, while eastbound motorists will follow Valley and Delaine streets, as well as Harris Avenue, according to a news alert.
Pedestrian access and driveway entrances to the Eagle Square shopping plaza will remain open throughout the project. Pedestrian access also will be maintained across the bridge through construction, said Rose Amoros, spokeswoman for the state department. During construction, a bus stop on Atwells Avenue in front of PriceRite will be moved to Valley Street, across from Newark Street.
The construction is part of a $2.5 million contract awarded to the John Rocchio Corp. to replace the 44-foot-long, top portion of the Atwells Avenue Bridge, which was damaged during flooding in 2010. The closure of the bridge will result in a reduction of time and cost in the project, according to the DOT.
