Senator pushes for Fed. Hill safety plan

PROVIDENCE – A state senator is advocating for a safety plan for the city’s Federal Hill neighborhood in the wake of two violent incidents that occurred late last month.

In a statement, Sen. Paul V. Jabour, D-Providence, said last week that he is pushing for a collaborative safety plan that would involve Federal Hill merchants and residents, the Providence Police Department, the city Board of Licensing and other city agencies. Among policies he would like to see enacted, Jabour said he believes the area needs an earlier closing time of 1 a.m. – instead of 2 a.m. – and an earlier last call for drinks of no later than 12:45 a.m.

In late July, two violent incidents occurred in the span of four days near The $3 Bar, a two-month-old restaurant located at 242 Atwells Ave. On Wednesday, July 23, 34-year-old Jonathan Stack was a beaten with a two-by-four in a parking lot behind the restaurant and later died. At about 2 a.m. on Sunday, July 27, a fight between two women at The $3 Bar grew into a brawl involving 20 to 25 people.

The city Board of Licenses temporarily closed the restaurant last week pending review of the incidents. •
