Serve Rhode Island, others get federal funds

CRANSTON – Serve Rhode Island and eight local nonprofit organizations will receive more than $2.14 million in federal AmeriCorps grants, Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., said in a news release.
Serve Rhode Island, which administers the state’s AmeriCorps program, will receive $600,000 in federal funding, which in turn will be used to award grants to nonprofit organizations and government agencies responding to local needs across the state.
Rhode Island organizations that won competitive AmeriCorps grants this year include:
• The Providence Plan, $465,500 to support literacy and school-readiness programs for underserved preschoolers.
• Save The Bay, $212,800 to provide 12 weeks of hands-on environmental education programming to students.
• The Institute for the Study & Practice of Nonviolence, $212,800 for nonviolence-intervention training.
• Brown University, $187,727 to provide in-school college advising.
• The Providence Children’s Museum, $170,907 to provide STEM and math-enrichment activities.
• Inspiring Minds, $133,000 to provide tutoring for students in low-performing elementary schools in Providence.
• Connecting for Children & Families Inc., $106,400 to tutor students struggling in reading and math.
• Teach for America – Rhode Island, $52,000 to support teachers in Providence and Blackstone Valley who are helping to break the local cycle of education inequity. •
