PROVIDENCE – Seven local nonprofit organizations have been awarded more than $1.48 million federal AmeriCorps grants as a result of the 2012 AmeriCorps State and National funding competition to advance the priorities of the Edward M. Kennedy Service America Act and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The grants will be administered through Serve Rhode Island, the state’s commission for national service.

“AmeriCorps is a great federal investment that is making a real difference in communities throughout Rhode Island,” said Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) in a statement. “These competitive grants will help more AmeriCorps members reach people in need and strengthen our communities.”

Local organizations who won competitive grants are:

  • Connecting for Children and Families, Inc. ($106,400)

  • Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence ($212,800)

  • Inspiring Minds ($133,000)

  • The Providence Plan ($465,500)

  • Save the Bay ($212,800)

  • Providence Children’s Museum ($170,910)

  • The College Advising Corps at Brown University ($187,727)

The grants will fund a total of 120 AmeriCorps positions at the organizations.

Some 80,000 individuals participate in AmeriCorps service through more than 14,000 organizations nationwide annually.

Last year, AmeriCorps mobilized 3.4 million community volunteers and tutored, mentored or served more than 3.5 million disadvantaged youth.
