PROVIDENCE – ShapeUp RI has announced its 10th annual Race Around Rhode Island, a 10-week virtual wellness journey that kicks off in the spring.
Companies are welcome to join the challenge, and create teams. Individuals also can participate. Enrollment begins on Feb. 2, with the Race Around Rhode Island starting March 23, and ending May 31.
Those who enroll track their steps and/or exercise, and virtually “walk around Rhode Island” reaching 10 different destinations along the way, with the daily goal of reaching 10,000 steps on a pedometer.
The end destination is Providence, but those who take on the challenge also will virtually visit Cumberland, Burrillville, Coventry, Westerly, South Kingstown, East Greenwich, Newport, Bristol, Barrington and Pawtucket.

Each destination highlights landmarks, healthy things to do and local vendors; the further one progresses in the challenge, the more will be unlocked, including coupons that can be used at vendors, including Launch Trampoline Park in Warwick.
According to ShapeUp RI, over the past decade, “more than 81,500 Rhode Islanders and 250 companies participated in this evidence-based program, walking millions of miles, losing thousands of pounds, and proving that teamwork is a powerful prescription for taking control of our health.”
There are two pricing options to join the challenge; more information can be found HERE.
ShapeUp will provide a standard ShapeUp RI pedometer, or can purchase Fitbit devices through ShapeUp RI at a discounted price. Companies also can leave it up to employees to buy a pedometer on their own, or use one that they already have.
Maggie Thomas, vice president, human resources and practice management, South County Hospital, said in a statement that the hospital participated for the first time last spring, and almost one-quarter of the staff signed up, losing 5 pounds on average.
