ShapeUp: Technology improves wellness programs


PROVIDENCE – ShapeUp released the results of its first annual Technology and Employee Wellness Survey.

ShapeUp – a national provider of social networking-based employee wellness solutions – sought to answer what technology employers used to promote employee wellness programs, what specific health objectives they used the technology for, what percentage of business leaders support the use of tech programs for employee health as well as what barriers to adoption existed.

“The way we approach health is changing dramatically. A major driving force behind this shift is the advent of health technology,” said the ShapeUp report. “Mobile apps, social networks, games and devices are aiding in the pursuit of better health by making obscure health concepts understandable, difficult lifestyle changes more approachable, and the solitary journey social.”

The report found that 94 percent of employers using technology for employee wellness programs believe that it has been “instrumental” in improving employee perceptions of the program.

Additionally, 90 percent of those surveyed confirmed that technology has had a positive impact on employee engagement in wellness programs.

The survey found that the most popular technologies used for employee health promotion were online forums, social networks, mobile solutions, online competitions and fitness tracking devices.

“There’s no question that technology is changing the face of employee wellness programs, and this first-of-its-kind industry survey allowed us to understand precisely how,” Dr. Rajiv Kumar, founder and CEO of ShapeUp said in prepared remarks.

“The results show that technology use in employee wellness programs is widespread and that the employers who have fully leveraged technology are solving some of their greatest challenges,” added Kumar. “ShapeUp is committed to leading technology innovation in the corporate wellness industry, and this annual survey will help us do that, year after year.”
