Dana and Josh Kretzmann knew how challenging it could be to launch and maintain a small, retail business. So when they had an opportunity to expand their shop, White Buffalo, into a larger space, they thought a shared space with other small businesses could help everyone get started.

That idea has materialized in Providence Share Space, at 140 Broadway, which opened in May 2015 and includes multiple businesses within 5,000 square feet.

In addition to running their own business, which features eclectic decor, jewelry and clothing, the Kretzmanns act essentially as landlords. There are eight other businesses leasing individual space. One of the latest additions, Inner Space Outsider Art Gallery & Store, sells the artwork of individuals who have mental illness or developmental disabilities.

Another shop, Seams Brilliant, sells sewing notions and specialty and vintage fabrics.

“We wanted to provide a space where we could let artists and small businesses get off the ground,” said Dana Kretzmann. •
