PORTSMOUTH – Candace Sharkey has been named the new CEO of Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties.

The appointment was announced by Stacey D. Carter, president of the board of directors of VNS.

Sharkey has been serving as interim CEO since October, assuming responsibility for financial stability of the $13 million home health care agency.

Sharkey replaced Jean Anderson, who served as CEO for 20 years. Anderson has moved on to Rhode Island Hospital, according to the company.
Visiting Nurse Services, founded in 1950, is a nonprofit home health care agency serving Aquidneck Island, Bristol County and southeastern Massachusetts with home care nursing, rehabilitation, hospice and community wellness clinics.

Sharkey has held many executive positions in health care since 1983, including assistant director of nursing administration at Rhode Island Hospital and CEO of Healthtouch Inc. In 2013, she came to VNS as chief compliance officer, initiating quality measurement projects and overseeing Medicare compliance plans.

Stacey Carter, president of the board of directors, said, “We are confident that she will continue to represent our mission of providing optimal health and quality of life for individuals and families, regardless of their ability to pay, in the communities we serve. Because of her qualifications and the work she has performed to date, the board has unanimously voted to make her appointment permanent.”
