“Our business model revolves around repeat work; 89 percent of our revenue is from repeat clients, [which is] extremely high in our industry,” said Ron Simoneau, a Shawmut Design and Construction vice president who co-manages its New England operations.

With eight offices across the country, the Boston-based company has some 1,400 employees, 80 to 100 of whom are local. At the employee-owned company, said Simoneau, “We work harder and are more committed.”

In New England, the company primarily builds academic and health care/life sciences facilities and preserves historic properties. Shawmut is now constructing new space and rehabbing a Newport mansion to become the Beechwood Museum; and building Moses Brown’s Woodman Family Community & Performance Center and Brown University’s School of Engineering. Brown is innovative in using integrated project delivery, which engages the highest levels of collaboration among the builder, architect, contractor and major subcontractors, said Simoneau. All the parties sign the same contract and share in risks and rewards.

Asked about the industry’s future in Rhode Island, Simoneau said, “There are a lot of projects on the planning board, including a robust building program at Brown. … The future construction outlook looks brighter than it has in recent years. We’re very optimistic.” •
